Ottawa gives you four genuinely different weddings depending on when you say “I do.” Tulips and green in spring, long golden patio evenings in summer, showstopping colour in fall, and a snow-globe wonderland in winter. There’s no single “best” month — there’s the one that fits your vision, your guest list, and your budget. Here’s the honest season-by-season breakdown to help you pick.

best time to get married in Ottawa

Summer (June–August): the classic Ottawa wedding

This is peak season, and for good reason. Warm evenings, gardens in full bloom, and sunsets that don’t quit until after 8:30 p.m. — which means dreamy golden-hour photos late into your reception. The trade-offs? Summer Saturdays are the first to book up (often 12–18 months out), prices are at their highest, and Ottawa can serve up a genuinely humid heatwave. If you’re dreaming of a patio, a garden, or a barn with the doors flung open, summer is your season.

Fall (September–October): the photographer’s favourite

If we’re being honest, fall might be the most photogenic time to get married in Ottawa. September brings warm days and cool, comfortable evenings; early-to-mid October is when the reds and golds explode across the Gatineau Hills. The light is softer, the air is crisp, and everything looks like a postcard. Fall Saturdays book up fast too, so if you want those foliage photos, don’t wait. (We go deep on timing in our fall wedding photos in Ottawa guide.)

Winter (November–March): underrated and genuinely magical

Here’s our slightly cheeky take: winter weddings are wildly underrated. Yes, it’s cold. But snow-draped photos, cosy candlelit receptions, and blue-hour portraits at 4:30 in the afternoon are pure magic — and you’ll often find better venue availability and off-season pricing. The key is planning short, well-timed outdoor photo bursts so nobody’s shivering. Bring a gorgeous coat and lean into it; winter delivers images no other season can.

Spring (April–May): fresh, green, and a little unpredictable

Spring in Ottawa is a bit of a wildcard — you might get sunshine and tulips (the Canadian Tulip Festival in May is stunning) or a surprise cold, wet week. What you do get is fresh greenery, lower demand than summer, and often friendlier pricing. If you’re flexible, adventurous, and have a solid indoor backup plan, a spring wedding can be beautiful and refreshingly relaxed.

Quick cheat sheet

  • Best light and colour: late September to mid-October
  • Longest days / latest sunsets: June and July
  • Best availability and value: winter and early spring
  • Most likely to book up first: summer and fall Saturdays
  • Wildcard weather: April and May

So when should you get married?

If photos and warm weather top your list, aim for late summer or early fall — and book early. If value and availability matter more, winter and spring are your friends and can be every bit as beautiful. Whatever you choose, the “best” season is the one where you feel most like yourselves.
