You’ve likely seen the aisle photo where the bride is framed by a sea of glowing phone screens instead of smiling faces. An unplugged ceremony is how you avoid that — and it’s easier to pull off than you’d think. Here’s what it means and how to ask for it kindly.

What is an unplugged ceremony?

An unplugged ceremony simply means asking guests to put their phones and cameras away during the ceremony, so everyone’s fully present — and so your professional photos aren’t cluttered with outstretched arms and screens. Guests can snap away again at the reception.

Why couples choose it

Grey Loft Studio — unplugged ceremony
  • Present guests. Faces, not phones. Your loved ones actually watching you say “I do.”
  • Cleaner photos. No stray phone blocking your partner’s face as you walk in, no bright screens in the background of your first kiss.
  • No accidental sabotage. Well-meaning guests stepping into the aisle for a photo can unintentionally ruin the professional shot. Unplugged prevents it.

How to ask guests (nicely)

A gentle heads-up does the trick. Try a sign at the entrance, a note in your programs, or a quick word from your officiant before things begin. Some wording you can borrow:

“Welcome! We invite you to be fully present with us today. Please turn off your phones and cameras during the ceremony — our photographer’s got it covered, and we can’t wait to share the photos.”

Keep it warm and light, and guests are almost always happy to oblige.

Does it actually help the photos?

Honestly, yes. Some of the most frustrating aisle photos happen when a phone or an arm intrudes at the exact wrong second. An unplugged ceremony gives your photographer a clean, unobstructed view of the moments you’re paying them to capture. (It pairs well with a good timeline, too.)

FAQ

What is an unplugged ceremony?
It’s a ceremony where guests are asked to put phones and cameras away so they’re present and the professional photos stay clean.

How do I ask guests to be unplugged?
Use a sign, a note in the program, or a quick announcement from your officiant. Keep the wording warm and reassure guests you’ll share the professional photos.

Does an unplugged ceremony improve wedding photos?
Yes — it prevents phones, screens, and outstretched arms from blocking key moments like the aisle walk and first kiss.

Can guests take photos at the reception?
Absolutely. Unplugged usually applies only to the ceremony; the reception is fair game.
