“Do we actually need an engagement session?” It’s a fair question — it’s extra time and sometimes extra money. But it might be the most useful non-wedding-day photos you take. Here’s the honest case for (and the times you can skip it).

is an engagement session worth it

What an engagement session really does

Beyond the pretty pictures, an engagement session is a practice run. It’s your chance to feel what it’s like to have a camera on you, to learn how your photographer works, and to get comfortable together — all before the pressure of the wedding day. Couples are almost always more relaxed on their wedding day because they did an engagement shoot first.

The practical perks

Grey Loft Studio — is an engagement session worth it
  • You get comfortable on camera before it counts, so wedding-day portraits feel easy.
  • You build trust with your photographer, which shows in every photo afterward.
  • You get usable images for save-the-dates, your guest book, a wedding-website, or the wall.
  • You bank a memory of this specific, fleeting chapter — being engaged — that you’ll be glad you have.

(If you want the cost and outfit details, our Ottawa engagement photos guide covers it.)

When you might skip it

If you’re genuinely camera-comfortable, short on time, or you’d simply rather put the whole budget into wedding-day coverage, skipping it is completely reasonable. It’s a “worth it for most, not mandatory for all” situation.

Our honest verdict

For the vast majority of couples, yes — it’s worth it. The comfort and trust it builds pays off in better, more natural wedding photos, and the images themselves earn their keep long before the wedding. If you’re on the fence, we say do it; we’ve never had a couple regret it.
