Every couple planning an outdoor-ish wedding has whispered the same anxious question: “But what if it rains?” Deep breath — a rainy wedding day is not a ruined one. With a little planning (and the right mindset), rain can even give you some of the most romantic photos of the whole day. Here’s how to be ready.

Always have a Plan B

The single best thing you can do is choose a venue with a solid indoor option or a tent, so a downpour doesn’t derail your ceremony or reception. When you’re touring venues, ask directly: “What’s the rain plan, and when do we have to decide?” A good venue will have a clear answer. Knowing Plan B exists lets you relax and enjoy the day regardless of the forecast.

Rainy-day photos can be stunning

Here’s the secret most couples don’t believe until they see it: rain photos have a mood all their own. A few of our favourite tricks:

  • Clear umbrellas — they keep you dry, let the light through, and look gorgeous in photos.
  • Reflections — wet pavement and puddles create dreamy mirror effects.
  • Cosy indoor light — window light and candlelit interiors are beautiful for portraits.
  • A quick dash outside — even five minutes under an umbrella between showers can produce magic.

Little things that help

Keep a couple of clear umbrellas on hand (they’re cheap and photograph best), pack a pair of backup shoes, and build a little flexibility into your timeline so you can seize a break in the weather when it comes. Trust your photographer — we’ve done this before and we’ve got you.

Mindset is everything

Some cultures consider rain on your wedding day good luck — a symbol of renewal and fertility. Whether or not you buy that, the couples who roll with the weather always end up happier (and with better photos) than the ones who let it steal the day. (Marrying somewhere like Le Belvédère? Many area venues have great indoor options.)

FAQ

What if it rains on my wedding day?
Have a venue with a solid indoor option or tent as Plan B, keep clear umbrellas handy, and trust your photographer — rainy photos can be beautiful.

Do you still get good photos if it rains?
Yes — clear umbrellas, reflections on wet ground, and cosy indoor light make for romantic, moody images.

Should I have a backup plan for an outdoor wedding?
Always. Ask your venue about their rain plan and the deadline to decide, so you can relax whatever the forecast does.

Is rain on your wedding day bad luck?
Many traditions actually consider it good luck — a sign of renewal. Either way, couples who embrace it end up happiest.
